Failing mental health hospital for children in Devon announces it is to close

22 March 2019 – Devon Live

An independent mental health hospital for children in Devon, which was found to be putting children and young people at risk by by staff falling asleep on duty, will close.

The 10-bed hospital in Chudleigh, which provides treatment and support for young people aged 12 to 18 with mental health problems, was investigated last year after allegations of inadequate and unsafe care were made to CQC.

The Huntercombe Group, who runs the hospital, has now announced it intends to close Meadow Lodge citing the reason is insufficient demand to keep it open. It currently provides support to only two young people.

The decision follows on from an NHS England review, to re-organise capacity of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services in the South region, which determined that Meadow Lodge will not be required.
