Report urges action on antimicrobial use in Irish care homes

31 March 2019 – Times

A new study has concluded that urgent action is needed to improve Irish nursing homes’ use of antimicrobials, such as antibiotics and antifungals, because of their extensive use as a preventive measure.

Researchers led by Meera Tandan at NUI Galway compared antimicrobial use in 2013 and 2016 in about 200 long-term care facilities.
Inappropriate use can put patients at risk of serious adverse effects and contributes to the growing problem of antibiotic resistance in bacteria.
