Experts say that with the older population growing, it is important to understand the impact of negative behaviour such as ageism, and to find ways to tackle discrimination and its effects to help people stay healthy as they age.

Ageism also appeared to be linked to poorer health among those it affected, the study shows, with reported victims of age discrimination more likely to suffer health problems or develop them over time.
