NHS uses fitness app to pay patients to avoid diabetes

23 February 2020 – Times

The NHS is to tackle the rise of long-term medical conditions by giving instant rewards to patients who take more exercise.

People at risk of diabetes are currently testing a programme using the nation’s compulsion with smartphones to improve their health. The plan is to motivate the 7 in 10 Britons who do not go to a gym by offering rewards.

The South West London Health and Care Partnership has partnered up with Sweatcoin, a fitness app with 400,000 users in the UK and 5m internationally. Patients earn rewards in cash and vouchers for their step counts.
